If there is anything Johannesburg has to offer you is a lot of, is space. This is why it pays to get a car rental in Johannesburg, South Africa’s cultural and economic centre. It is the fastest and easiest way to get to wherever you have to be in the city. Here are some tips that will come in handy.
Beware of Illegal Parking
Be careful where you park your car rental in Johannesburg. Cars parked illegally are towed away. These are then impounded by the metro police, avoid headaches and expenses, park only in officially designated parking areas.
Refuelling
There are no self-service petrol stations in Johannesburg, so don’t bother looking for one. Each station has at least one or two service attendants that do the refuelling for you. There are two ways to pay for your petrol:
– In cash.
– using what locals call the Garage Card which are readily available in most banks.
– Your bank card
Getting Your Bearings on the Road
It is very easy to get lost in this sprawling metropolis, more so because the freeway interchanges between the city and the airport are spaghetti-like. Make navigation easier by getting a reliable map or GPS. Also, find your bearings on the road by looking for landmarks. Here’s an insider’s tip: look for two telecommunication towers in your immediate horizon. The Hillbrow tower sits near the city’s center. Brixton tower sits in the west. These two look different from other buildings and are easy to spot.
Make these two towers your compass.
– If Hillbrow is found on the left of Brixton, you’re in the north.
– If Brixton is found on the left of Hillbrow, you’re in the south.
– If Hillbrow is closer to you than Brixton, you’re in the east.
– If Brixton is closer to you than Hillbrow, you’re in the west.
